The ski region of Dachstein-West is located in the Alps, in the heart of Europe, more or less, at the geographical centre of Austria.
The region is where the Dachstein mountain range is at its best, boasting friendly Austrian hospitality in the southern corner of the Salzkammergut.
Gosau, Russbach and Annaberg are typical alpine villages that are easy to reach by main road, and public transport, and are located at an altitude of approx. 800 metres above sea level. You can find this region between the idyllic world-famous village of Hallstatt in the Upper Austrian Dachstein-Salzkammergut area, and the villages of Russbach and Annaberg, the home of ski star and 5-time World Cup winner, Marcel Hirscher.
Dachstein-West is now a top-class ski area. Skiing in Dachstein West offers an impressive mountain panorama, perfect pistes, mostly with a snow guarantee, modern lifts, traditional mountain lodges and inexpensive ski passes. Skiing on low mountain ranges has a low risk of avalanche and it comes with protection from the wind, whilst enjoying views of the higher nearby mountains – you should love it, especially since there is the well-signposted ‘Panoronda’ cruisers’ ski circuit with a total length of 44 km. This is another reason why Dachstein-West is known as having one of the best skiing views in Austria.
The traditional atmosphere of the ski lodges is not only loved by many happy and satisfied guests, it has also been confirmed as being ‘above average’ many times in guest surveys carried out by independent market researchers. If you look at the price / km of piste, then Dachstein-West is in a class of its own.

Driving in Austria in Winter
The local authorities keep the roads ploughed and gritted through winter. Drivers must fit special 'winter tyres' to all cars in the area from mid-November to mid-April. Hire cars have them fitted ready for use. A toll disc for your windscreen must be bought for motorway driving.
